A dog was killed after a BMW overturned in a police pursuit in Swindon.

Armed officers started chasing the X5 when it failed to stop in Great Western Way – fleeing at high speed before crashing in Duchess Way, Stratton, at around 11.45pm on Friday (14 February).

When the vehicle flipped, two dogs escaped and ran off from the area. One, named Zira, died after being struck by a member of the public’s car on the A419 a short time later.

Two men were arrested at the scene, while two women passengers – aged in their 20s and 30s – were taken to hospital for treatment. They aren’t believed to be seriously hurt.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a licence, driving without third-party insurance, and further arrested for theft.

A 27-year-old man was arrested for driving without insurance, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and drug driving. Both men have been bailed while enquiries continue.

The BMW was seized after the driver was found to have no insurance or a licence. Some of the tyres were also in a dangerous condition.
