Businesses in Swindon close as armed police patrol over riot risk

Many businesses in Swindon have closed as armed police patrol over the risk of a riot.

A far-right protest is reportedly planned for around 7pm this evening (Wednesday), with demonstrators expected to match from the County Ground to the town centre.

Now, businesses and government organisations are locking up and sending staff home.

The Jobcentre Plus in Princes Street, Sanford House in Sanford Street and The Leonardo Hotel in Fleming Way are just some of the establishments to close their doors.

An unmarked armed response vehicle was spotted driving slowly along College Street in the town centre, while a marked local unit was seen in Sanford Street and later in County Road.

At the County Ground, the car park appears to have been cordoned off with metal fencing – but it’s not clear whether this is ahead of the potential protest or for another reason.

Carfax Medical Centre has closed. In a statement, a spokesperson said: “Due to information received about a potential protest in the town centre today we have decided to close Carfax Medical Centre from 1.30pm.

“If you have a face to face appointment this afternoon at Carfax Medical Centre you will be contacted by our team to rearrange your appointment.

“Please do not attend Carfax Medical Centre after 1.30pm today.

“We appreciate this may cause some inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.”

It’s understood that organisations supporting or housing refugees have been alerted.

Following speculation of the protest, Chief Superintendent Phil Staynings said: “We are aware that there are a very limited number of social media posts which are causing some understandable concern in our communities.

“Wiltshire Police will continue to monitor and provide reassurance with a high visibility policing footprint across key locations in the County.

“Currently we have not seen any tension or disruption in Swindon or Wiltshire and we are continuing to engage and reassure our communities. This of course is being kept under constant review.

“Wiltshire Police does have contingency plans in place and anyone identified as engaging in disorder will be met with the full Force of the law.

“We will not hesitate to take robust action against a small minority who are intent on being involved in criminal activity.”
