A man has been arrested after climbing scaffolding in Swindon town centre.

Police attended the scene at Regent Circus at around 8.30pm this evening (Wednesday).

A man, wearing grey clothing, scaled scaffolding around the Nandos building – and reportedly refused to come down when officers arrived.

Fire crews, including specialist rescue units, were sent to the incident to provide urgent assistance.

The aerial ladder platform appliance was utilised to get officers onto the rooftop in an attempt to detain the stubborn male – aged in his 30s.

Dozens of people watched as the hour-long stand-off unfolded in a relatively busy town centre.

Regent Circus was closed to both motorists and pedestrians as 999 crews worked to remove the man from height safely.

The suspect eventually gave up and walked out onto the roof – where he was taken to the ground by a female police officer before backup arrived.

The area reopened following the man’s arrest at around 10pm.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: “A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and intentionally causing a public nuisance following an incident in Regent Circus, Swindon last night.

“Officers were called to the area at around 8:30pm on Wednesday following reports a man was climbing scaffolding and appeared to be drunk.

“The man was located on the second floor of the scaffolding and failed to engage with officers.

“Other emergency services were called to support, and the man was eventually arrested and removed from the roof in an aerial unit.

“Several road closures were put in place along with diverting the public away from the scene.

“The man remains in custody for questioning.”
