Man sentenced to 16 weeks in jail for breach of major incident cordons in Salisbury

A man who breached one of the major incident cordons in Salisbury on Friday has been sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment at Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Jamie Knight, 30, of Fair View Road, Wilton, pleaded guilty to a racially-aggravated public order offence, assaulting a police officer, common assault and criminal damage.

He breached the cordon in place at The Maltings, where former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found on 4 March. He was restrained by a police officer and a security guard.

Assistant Chief Constable Craig Holden said the cordons were in place for  “two very important reasons – to protect the public and to preserve scenes which may be of interest to the investigation”.

“I hope this highlights how robustly the police and the courts will deal with anyone who breaches these cordons and puts themselves and others at risk”, he added.

Another man, 29, from Salisbury, was also arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer and released under investigation pending further enquiries.
