Two people have been assaulted while detaining a suspected shoplifter in Swindon.

Wiltshire Police were called to The Parade in the town centre at around 11am this morning, following reports of a thief being detained by supermarket staff in Tesco Metro.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the situation escalated, resulting in a shop worker and a police officer being injured. Their injuries are not believed to be serious.

South Western Ambulance Service also attended the scene; a number of ambulances were scene parked on College Street behind Tesco while they were responding to the incident.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft and assaulting a police officer and member of shop staff. He remains in police custody at this time.
