Homes have been evacuated and a cordon is in place following a major gas leak.

Emergency services were called to London Road in Salisbury shortly after 4pm today (Wednesday) following reports of a burst gas main.

Three fire crews, from Salisbury and Wilton, are in attendance alongside a water carrier from Andover and an incident command vehicle from Devizes.

While 999 responders and the gas company work to plug the leak, an 80-metre cordon is in place for public safety.

A number of homes have been evacuated as a result. Approximately 75 people have been moved away from the danger zone.

London Road is currently closed between the A30/A338 roundabout and the Hampton Park Roundabout.

Trains have been stopped by Network Rail and South Western Railway.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) as asked locals to “keep doors and windows closed” while the incident is dealt with.

A spokesperson said: “Anyone in the immediate area may be able to smell gas in the air, so the advice is to stay indoors and keep doors/windows closed.

“DWFRS is working with other emergency services and partners to bring this incident to a conclusion as quickly as possible.

“Gas engineers are on scene, and attempts are underway to cap the leak so the safety precautions can be lifted.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said in a statement: “We have been notified by Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service of a gas leak in the London Road area of Salisbury.

“The road is currently closed and we would urge people to avoid the area. Thank you for your patience.”

UPDATE: London Road reopened at around 9pm. However, work is ongoing to fix the damage, and the railway line is to remain closed on Thursday (18 April).
