UPDATE: Woman dies in M4 crash as two others suffer life-threatening injuries

Four people have been injured in a serious crash on the M4 in Swindon.

Three air ambulances were deployed to the single-vehicle road traffic collision on the westbound carriageway between junctions 15 and 16 at around midday today (Saturday).

A grey Volvo left the motorway and ploughed into a tree. There were four people within the vehicle, and all were injuries.

It’s not yet clear how many people were hurt, but at least one person sustained significant injuries and was taken to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Great Western Air Ambulance landed at the scene – with both charities’ critical care medics providing urgent treatment.

The third medical helicopter, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, was diverted to another serious crash elsewhere in the county.

A forensic collision investigation is due to be carried out in due course.

The M4 – between junctions 15 and 16 westbound – is expected to remain closed until the early hours of tomorrow morning (Sunday, 10 March).

The eastbound carriageway remains open.
