A police constable and three women have been recognised for saving a suicidal person.

PC Will Saunders was off duty when he spotted a a woman in distress on the M4 bridge between Royal Wootton Bassett and Hook on 21 January this year.

He stopped to check on the woman and she started to climb over the barrier. Reacting immediately, he ran over to hold on to the woman, who was then on the other side.

Will removed his belt so that he could loop it around the woman to help pull her back over the barrier.

Supported by Jackie Gough, Caroline Symmons, and Sue Jewell – who had also stopped to help when driving by – the group managed to bring the woman over the barrier to safety.

She was kept safe at the roadside until on-duty police officers arrived to take over.

All four were awarded a Chief Constable’s Certificate of Excellence for their quick thinking and courageous actions displayed during the incident.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Their actions involved risking their own safety to help someone in a crisis situation, and we have no doubt they directly averted a potential tragedy that evening.

“Thank you all for the selfless bravery you showed that night.”
