Two cars were involved in a shunt on the M4 bridge closest to last week’s fatal crash.

Police were called to the road traffic collision between the villages of Burton and Acton Turville, near Castle Combe, shortly before 2pm on Friday (20 October).

After a lorry overturned on a car and tragically killed two women on the motorway, motorists used country lanes to bypass the closure between junctions 17 and 18.

The B4039 – which has a vehicle bridge over the M4 with a view of the incident – was busy with many motorists slowing down to view the horror scene or take photographs on mobile phones.

Numerous motorists parked at the roadside to leave their vehicles, some even taking children as young as five to watch the ongoing emergency response effort.

A black Dacia Duster ploughed into the back of a grey Volvo V40 on the bridge – a crash that was inevitable in the circumstances.

Nobody was injured in the incident, but police were required to direct traffic past the two-car shunt and to arrange the recovery of the damaged vehicles.
