Firefighters have tackled a huge blaze involving 70 tonnes of hay on a farm this afternoon.

Three fire engines were called the serious fire off Green Lane in Ford, near Old Sarum, at around 1pm on Sunday, when flames and plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around.

Crews used two hose reels, a short extension ladder, a water wall and drags to extinguish the fire.

Farm machinery was also used to assist in moving the bales to check for any further seats of fire.

Three young males were seen leaving the scene around the time of the incident, police say.

PC James Barrett said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area around this time – in particular, we would like to hear from anyone who saw three young males, believed to be in their early teens, in the area of the track which links Bishopdown to Old Sarum and Salisbury. One of the males is believed to have been wearing a grey top.

“This is a popular track so there is likely to have been people in the area at this time, who could have vital information. Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
