A suspected drink driver has been arrested following a crash in Swindon town centre.

Police were called to a reports of four vehicles being struck by a white Ford Transit van in Station Road at around 8.30pm last night (Friday, 29 September).

The driver of the van fled the scene on foot. A man aged in his 20s – thought to be the driver – was swiftly detained responding officers and taken to hospital as a precaution.

The suspect has since been discharged from hospital and is now in custody – held on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

A fire crew attended to make the scene safe

A Jaguar car, a silver van and a Mini Cooper sustained damage in the incident, but nobody suffered any serious injuries.

Contrary to other media reports, there is nothing to suggest the van was stolen at this stage.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service sent a crew from Cricklade to make the scene safe. All Swindon-based fire crews were busy responding to other incidents.

Wiltshire Police asks anyone who saw what happened please contact them by calling 101 quoting reference number 54230103546.
