A man accused of stabbing his wife in a Melksham village has been remanded in custody.

Paul Korkus was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court this afternoon (Monday).

Ben May, prosecuting, said the 61-year-old allegedly started stabbing his wife at their home in Newleaze Park, Broughton Gifford, in the early hours of Sunday (7 May).

The court was told that the defendant had been “in a distressed state for a number of days” prior to the incident and had recently attempted to take his own life.

Mr May asked the bench to remand him in custody and Harriet Heard, defending, did not make a bail application.

Korkus was not required to enter a plea at today’s hearing as the offence of GBH with intent is indictable only. If convicted of the crime, it carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment.

The defendant will be held in custody until 9 June, when he will appear at Swindon Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
