The M4 is blocked north of Bristol following a serious road traffic collision.

Emergency services, including Wiltshire Air Ambulance, are attending the incident in the Almondsbury area after they were called at around 8.30am today (Thursday).

The road is blocked eastbound between junctions 21 (Chepstow) and 20 (M5/Severn Bridges).

Traffic is backed up for many miles, with motorists on the M4 and M48 facing significant travel delays.

The helicopter left its base in Wiltshire at 8.50am, landing on or next to the M4 at the scene of the crash.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “Traffic is currently stopped on the M4 eastbound between J21 (Chepstow) and J20 (M5) Severn Bridges.

“Emergency services are currently attending a collision. There are delays of at least 20 minutes.”
