UPDATE: Woman arrested after car demolishes traffic lights on busy Swindon route

A major route in Swindon is blocked following a single-vehicle road traffic collision.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Drove Road at around 2.45pm today (Tuesday).

A white Mercedes-Benz has crashed into a set of traffic lights, completely destroying them. Two bollards also appear to have been wiped out in the impact.

Fire crews, an ambulance and police are all in attendance, with firefighters expected to remove the car’s roof to free the driver – who appears to be medically trapped.

The road, near The Merlin pub crossroads, is closed between Upham Road and Groundwell Road. Traffic is building in the area.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We are currently attending a single vehicle RTC on Drove Road, Swindon, at the Merlin Pub crossroads.

“Recovery is underway at the junction, causing a heavy backlog of traffic in all directions. Please avoid the area.”
