A specialist search dog has been brought in after a ‘gunpoint robbery’ in Swindon.

Armed police officers were deployed to reports of the serious incident at Rivermead Skate Park in Westlea at around 6pm yesterday evening (Monday, 29 August).

The victim, who had a young child with him, was robbed of his electric bike by three males – who were understood to be wearing balaclavas and were riding bikes.

This morning (Tuesday, 30 August), a specially-trained search dog was brought in to carry out a detailed search of the area.

As of 10am, only numerous used spliffs (rolled cannabis cigarettes) were located – but the search is expected to continue for some time.

Wiltshire 999s understands that a firearm was used in the incident. The male victim, in his 30s, was taken to hospital with non-serious head injuries.

Wiltshire Police has confirmed that numerous children were in the area at the time of the robbery – witnessing dramatic events unfold.

Supporting armed police on the ground, the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter from Oxford was also tasked with locating the suspects. However, it’s not believed anyone has been arrested at this stage.

DI Rachel Hardy said: “The three suspects were wearing face masks at the time and a witness has reported one of them is believed to have been carrying a weapon. They left in the direction of the underpass towards Asda.

“The incident happened in daylight when the park was busy with lots of people including children who had been enjoying their day – we believe there were numerous witnesses, and officers have been gathering witness statements however many of these people would have no doubt been shaken up by what they saw.

“We take reports of this nature extremely seriously and officers will be continuing with extensive enquiries today to identify those responsible.

“A cordon remains in place and there is likely to be a heightened police presence in the area while enquiries are carried out – please do not be alarmed by this. If you have any concerns please speak to an officer.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone who may have information, should call 101 immediately and quote log number 253 of August 29.”
