Wiltshire Police has confirmed that a motorcyclist crashed head-on into a parked police car.

The road traffic collision happened in Shaftesbury Avenue, Swindon, shortly after 3pm yesterday afternoon (Sunday, 21 August).

Officers stopped their BMW X5 at the roadside, illuminated the vehicle’s blue lights and indicated for an oncoming motorcyclist to stop.

Instead, the 18-year-old motorcyclist struck the front of the stationary police car. As a result, he sustained some very minor injuries.

The force says the incident was reviewed by the Roads Policing Unit and by an inspector – and found that the police were not a fault.

Read Wiltshire Police’s statement in full:

“An officer was on routine patrol in an unmarked police vehicle in the Parks area of Swindon responding to community-raised concerns regarding anti-social behaviour, specifically involving motorcycles.

“The police vehicle was parked up when the blue lights were illuminated to request an approaching motorcyclist to stop. However, the motorcyclist struck the front of the police vehicle, causing minor damage to the car and the motorcycle.

“The motorcyclist – an 18-year-old man – received minor injuries.

“The incident has been investigated by the Roads Policing Unit and reviewed by the Roads Policing Inspector with no fault found of the police driver. There will therefore be no referral to the IOPC.”
