Travellers arrive in Highworth – police barricade rec entrance and pubs forced to close

Travellers have set up camp in Highworth – with attempts being made to stop more arriving.

The group are understood to have arrived at the recreation ground off A361 Swindon Road early this morning (Friday, 29 July), with more arriving throughout the day.

A local resident claims to have counted 17 caravans on the site – which is used by Highworth Town Football Club.

This afternoon, A number of police vehicles were reportedly spotted barricading the entrance to the field as more vehicles arrived to join the illegal encampment.

After a group of travellers caused significant issues across the town last summer, local businesses – including at least two pubs – have closed their doors.

A spokesperson for The Plough Inn said: “Due to recent events we will be closed until further notice. We will keep you updated for any changes to this.”

Highworth Town Council says it has visited the site and asked the group to leave.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “Wiltshire Police and Swindon Borough Council have attended the site, Officers have issued the group notice to leave the area of the Lower Rec by 10am on the 30th July 2022.

“The group were compliant and engaging and are aware of the instruction to leave the area on the 30th July at 10am.

“The group have advised of their intentions on keeping the area clean and clear, however Swindon Streetsmart team will be alerted to attend the area to remove any waste.”
