A knifeman has asked a court to change his curfew so he could attend Royal Ascot.

Norman Ford, 26, narrowly escaped an immediate prison sentence for the possession of two knives and making threats of violence toward his nephew earlier this year.

On 3 May, Swindon Magistrates’ Court imposed a suspended custodial sentence on the defendant and as a punitive element, a GPS-monitored daily home detention curfew between 8pm and 7am.

But on 7 June, Ford asked the court to vary his curfew until 9pm on 16 June – so he could attend Royal Ascot races with his family.

The event at Ascot Racecourse, located 56 miles away from his home address, ends at 8pm. Extending the curfew by one hour would allow him to attend the entire event, rather than leave early.

Hearing that he has 12 convictions for 25 offences, with the most recent being knife-related offences, they refused his application.
