Police and the bomb squad are attending a property in Corsham after an armed incident at a shop.

Officers were called to Londis in Pickwick Road at approximately 8.45pm yesterday (5 May) following a report that a man was in store threatening staff with a handgun.

When officers attended the scene, the man had left the area, however, enquiries and local knowledge from officers led them to make an arrest of a man in his 30s from Corsham.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

A large police presence, including a police drone, was spotted in Dicketts Road at the time. It’s believed that’s where officers found the suspect.

Today (6 May), officers remain on the scene – including staff specialist taskforce Fortitude and CID – at a house in the road alongside the bomb squad.

Insp James Brain said: “Following the initial report, residents will have no doubt been aware that there was an increased police presence in the Corsham area overnight while enquiries were conducted and a man was arrested.

“We will be continuing with our enquiries this morning and we would urge anyone who may have information to contact us immediately.

“I appreciate news of this incident may be concerning for residents, but please be reassured that reports of this nature, whilst rare, are always taken extremely seriously and I am pleased to report that an arrest was made swiftly.

“Fortunately, nobody was injured but understandably those involved were left shaken up as a result.”

The man arrested remains in custody in Melksham for questioning.

Anyone with information should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54220046125.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
