Two teenage boys have been arrested after a fire destroyed a former school building.

Emergency services were called to the scene in St Phillips Road, Stratton St Margaret, at around 4pm today (19 March) following reports of smoke billowing from the premises.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) sent at least five fire engines to the incident, including an aerial platform appliance.

The derelict building, previously known as the Stratton Education Centre, was destroyed by fire.

Wiltshire police officers have since arrested two teenage boys on suspicion of arson.

However, the force says it is yet to ascertain how the fire started.

A spokesperson said: “Police were called alongside the fire service at 4.30pm yesterday (19/3) following reports that the centre in St Philips Road was well alight.

“Officers attended the scene to assist with road closures while the incident was dealt with.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known however, as part of our enquiries, we have arrested two teenagers on suspicion of arson.

“Both youths, aged 15 and 16 and from the local area, have since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

“We’d urge anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area prior to the fire, to call 101 and quote crime reference number 54220028379.

“Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
