A footballer has allegedly been attacked by a rival player at a match in Swindon.

George Bouverie-Brine was rushed to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford after suffering significant facial injuries at Penhill Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon (29 January).

The match, between Swindon and District Football League teams Nine Elms FC and Nalgo Sports Club FC, was called off following the serious incident after 2pm.

The 28-year-old victim – playing for Nalgo Sports Club FC – sustained injuries to his eye, nose and cheek which are understood to require specialist treatment, including surgery.

Nine Elms FC player Ryan Welland, 29, of Beech Avenue, Pinehurst, was arrested and later charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent.

He appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning (1 February), where he was remanded into custody to appear before a judge at Swindon Crown Court in March.

A conviction for GBH with intent carries a sentence of up to life imprisonment.

PC Vinnicombe, of Central North Neighbourhood Team, said: “Violence of any kind, including violence in sport, will be taken seriously and simply will not be tolerated.

“People play and watch football for the love of the sport, they should not have to tolerate any kind of violence during a competitive match.”
