From Monday, people living in England and Wales will face a £5,000 fine if they leave the country for a non-essential reason.
Amendments to the coronavirus laws in place to restrict the spread of the virus and save lives will holidays abroad banned.
It will become a criminal offence to take a holiday out of the country, with holidaymakers risking a conviction if they breach the new strict law.
Anyone planning on leaving Britain for an essential reason – for work or a funeral for example – will be required to fill in a request form first.
The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Steps) (England) Regulations 2021 laws come into force on 29 March.
According to the legal document: “The Regulations also impose restrictions on leaving the United Kingdom without a reasonable excuse (regulation 8).”
The law says no-one may “leave England to travel to a destination outside the United Kingdom, or travel to, or be present at, an embarkation point for the purpose of travelling from there to a destination outside the United Kingdom” without a reasonable excuse.
