Men drove 101 miles to Wiltshire for ‘dog walk’ – police issue them £200 fines

Two men drove from Exeter in south Devon to Wiltshire to ‘walk their dog’, despite the national lockdown preventing non-essential travel.

Police officers found the pair in Pewsey, in the east of the county, on Sunday after being dispatched to reports of hare coursing.

On conducting a search of the area, officers located two men – in their 30s – in Green Drove. They told police they were out for exercise and to walk their dog.

They were told that travelling 101 miles from their homes in Exeter was not considered an essential reason and they were issued with fixed penalty notices.

“Please remember that the current national lockdown rules require you to stay at home unless you have an essential reason for leaving”, a police spokesperson commented.

Whilst driving to take exercise is allowed, the government rules state you must remain local. Local is defined as the village, town, or part of the city where you live.
