A police officer was assaulted when she was responding to reports of a coronavirus breach at Stonehenge in the early hours of this morning.

The force was called to the English Heritage site visitor centre after being alerted to a group of people who had turned up and were refusing to leave at around 1.30am.

Officers attended and located eight people from the London area who were obstructive and had no good reason to be there.

While dealing with the incident, a female police officer was hit to the face and suffered a cut to her eye.

Four men and three women were issued with £200 fines for breach of lockdown restrictions.

A 57-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and has been released under investigation while our enquiries continue.

Sergeant Keith Jackson, who was in attendance, said: “This was a challenging situation for the attending officers, dealing with obstructive individuals who failed to see the potential danger of their actions.

“This was a clear breach of the national lockdown restrictions and I hope this sends a strong message that we will take action when people deliberately and wilfully flout the rules and cause a risk to public health.”
