The victim of a stabbing in Royal Wootton Bassett is ‘stable’ in hospital, police say.

The man, in his 50s, was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital after being knifed in the stomach area at an address in Rylands Way at around midday.

Two males, aged 21 and 23, have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remain in custody at Gablecross Police Station for questioning this afternoon.

Newly qualified police dog Champ was praised for his work following the stabbing, which was his first day on shift with Wiltshire Police. He, and his handler Sergeant Palframan, located property relating to the crime after tracking from the scene yesterday afternoon.

Inspector Doug Downing, who’s in charge of the Neighbourhood Policing Team for Royal Wootton Bassett, said: “I appreciate that an increased police presence in this part of town will cause some concern to those living in the area.

“However, I want to reassure residents that the officers are carrying out their enquiries as part of this investigation and that there are two people in custody.

“If anyone has any concerns please feel free to stop any of our officers in the area to speak to them.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call us on 101 or speak to an officer at the scene, quoting crime reference number 54200091033.  Alternatively, you can report it anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
