A woman faced a backlash from the public tonight after claiming to have phoned Wiltshire Police in an attempt to have planned roadworks stopped.

Swindon Borough Council informed local residents of their overnight works involving the removal of a double roundabout from the Moonrakers junction from tonight until Friday.

But one woman took to the Wiltshire 999s Incident Alerts Facebook group suggesting that police should intervene and stop the work from taking place because it is ‘loud’.

She said police are ‘failing local residents by not taking action’ – but the police do not have any power to stop lawful, planned roadworks from taking place.

On Facebook, floods of comments came in from outraged Wiltshire 999s readers, some suggesting the caller should be arrested for wasting police time.

A spokesperson said: “Over the course of three nights, between Tuesday, 28 July until Friday, 31 July, the contractor will be removing the double roundabout at the junction.

“During this night work the junction will be controlled using temporary traffic lights and the road will be kept open to reduce disruption.

“Work on those evenings is expected to start at 8pm, however, workers will be on site setting out traffic management measures before that.

“During the daytime the junction will be marked out using cones to replicate the current double roundabout layout. These traffic measures are expected to have minimal impact on road users.”
