Wiltshire Police set up coronavirus checkpoints in Chippenham

A number of coronavirus lockdown checkpoints have been set up in Chippenham today.

Police officers have been stopping vehicles in various locations across the town – including at Bath Road Industrial Estate – to ensure that motorists are making only essential trips.

Whilst police do not have the power to use ‘stop and account’, officers do have the power to stop any vehicle for any reason under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

During a stop, officers can ask motorists why they are out. If they don’t fall into any of the ‘reasonable excuse’ categories then they can be dealt with for committing an offence under the coronavirus legislation, the College of Policing guidance states.

Anyone caught breaking the new lockdown laws face a £60 fine, or arrest if their fail to comply.

A spokesperson for Chippenham Police said: “A number of vehicles were stopped and drivers and passengers spoken to, to ensure they were following the Government guidelines in relation to non-essential travel.

“We’re pleased to say that everyone had a legitimate reason for being out of their home and the engagement was well-received.

“Please, make sure you are following the guidelines to help protect the NHS and keep people safe.”
