Driving to a location for exercise is illegal, Avon and Somerset Police are warning people.

Officers have been patrolling sights across Somerset since the UK coronavirus lockdown laws came into effect on 23 March, issuing leaflets to those travelling for non-essential purposes.

Wiltshire Police are understood to be warning those attending country parks across the county that they cannot drive to beauty spots for exercise or dog walking, or any other purpose.

The Avon and Somerset Police leaflet states: “The government restrictions currently in place DO NOT permit you to use your vehicle to travel to this location for exercise.

“Each and every one of us has been instructed to avoid ALL UNNECESSARY TRAVEL.

“You are entitled to exercise once daily. This should be by walking, running or cycling from your home address. You should not be out driving to a location away from your home to carry this out.”

The news comes after police had to deal with 15 birdwatchers who were found to be gathering at a beauty spot in Gloucestershire yesterday afternoon viewing a rare bird.

UPDATE: Since this story was originally published, Wiltshire Police has issued a similar leaflet echoing Avon and Somerset Police.
