One person has been confirmed dead at the scene of an explosion in Andover.

The blast demolished one house and seriously damaged another at around 2.30am this morning.

Firefighters from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene to assist their fire colleagues with the major incident across the border in Hampshire.

Rescue workers have been working at the scene on Launcelot Close, off King Arthur’s Way, since the early hours of today, remaining at the scene well into this evening.

Local MP, Kit Malthouse tweeted: “Tragic incident in Andover last night – one body recovered following a gas explosion at 2am on Launcelot Close KAW.

“Deepest condolences. Emergency services continue search and gas board on site. Briefed by leader Cllr Phil North re events and evacuated residents.”

It is not yet clear whether anyone else was inside the home at the time of the explosion.
