A dog has been found dead in a field in Melksham after concerns were raised about the discovery of a decapitated animal.
RSPCA volunteers attended a field off Brabazon Way and Falcon Way alongside Search & Scan following reports about the remains.
Attending the upsetting scene, the animal was confirmed to be a female terrier-type dog and has since been recovered from the grassland.
According to RSPCA Wiltshire Mid Branch, the condition of the body had been significantly affected by decomposition.
The charity clarified that the dog was not missing its head, following concerns surrounding the nature of the discovery.
It is believed the dog had been buried and was likely somebody’s pet, and may have been left there due to a lack of funds for a cremation.
A microchip was found, but it was not registered – leaving volunteers unable to immediately identify her owner.
Attention has now turned to finding the dog’s family and getting her remains back home.
Graceful Goodbyes has offered to cremate the dog free of charge so that her remains can be returned to her family.
