Rogue traders are uninvited doorstep callers who use high-pressure tactics to sell substandard, incomplete or unnecessary home maintenance work.
This can include roofing, gardening and driveway repairs.
Elderly and vulnerable people are often targeted, and residents are being urged to keep an eye on neighbours who may be more at risk.
Wiltshire Council Trading Standards is advising residents not to engage with uninvited cold callers offering home, roof or garden maintenance.
People should not open the door or speak to callers if they are not expecting them.
Anyone looking for tradespeople is advised to check for verified professionals through the Buy With Confidence scheme, which is endorsed by Trading Standards.
Residents are also advised to obtain at least three written quotes before agreeing to any property repairs.
Trading Standards says people should avoid paying upfront or in cash, with credit card or bank transfer payments offering greater financial protection.
Residents are also being encouraged to look out for vulnerable neighbours and report concerns about potential rogue traders to the relevant authorities.
