Two Wiltshire Police cars belonging to the Serious Collision Investigation Team have crashed on a country road near Chippenham.
The road traffic collision, which did not involve members of the public, happened in the village of Kington St Michael at around 9.30am on Friday morning (21 August).
A marked Volvo V90, featuring Serious Collision Investigation Team branding on the rear windows, and an unmarked red Skoda Octavia VRS were involved.
Wiltshire Police confirmed that it happened during a tactical pursuit training session, and nobody was injured in the incident.
Footage of the aftermath was captured and shared on social media. The video amassed a staggering 2.3 million views and more than 85,000 shares.
“How seriously police in the UK take their roles…”, the caption read.
The irony of the crash was not lost on viewers, resulting in hundreds of comments – many ribbing the police.
One person suggested Wiltshire Police may need to establish an even more specialist unit, joking: “They need “super serious collision investigation team””
Another appeared to suggest the officers were simply getting into character, writing: “to think like a serious collision you must become a serious collision”.
For one viewer, the training session had seemingly turned into something of a practical assessment. They described it as a “quick mock exam”.
Someone else found a positive in the situation, quipping: “They where first at the scene”.
But the incident also raised an important tongue-in-cheek question about who investigates the investigators.
One person asked: “does a more senior team comes out to investigate”.
Another imagined the thought process behind finding a crash to examine, writing: “If i was a collision where would i be”.
And, almost inevitably for a motoring mishap shared on British social media, someone offered the familiar observation: “can’t park there mate”.
