A man has been arrested after a gas leak sparked the evacuation of homes in Tidworth.
Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle and a gas cabinet in Station Road at around 9pm on Thursday (6 August).
The driver of the vehicle involved, a man, was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and being unfit through drink or drugs.
As a result of the crash, the gas main was damage. On the advice of the gas company, Wiltshire Police have put cordons in place and evacuated dozens of homes.
Cordons remain in place this morning (Friday) as gas engineers work to stem the leak. Gas can be smelt across Tidworth, particularly within half a mile of the incident.
Those who are feeling ill as a result are urged to call 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.
In a statement, the force said: “We are currently in attendance at a collision in Station Road, Tidworth.
“The incident happened shortly after 9pm – no other vehicles were involved and nobody is believed to have been injured.
“However, due to concerns regarding a gas main at the collision site, we have road closures in place in Station Road and Perham Down Road and houses within a 100 metre radius of the site have been evacuated whilst the scene is made safe.
“A man has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving and Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act and taken to custody for questioning.”
