The M4 has been closed westbound near Swindon after a “significant” fire involving a lorry carrying hay.
Emergency services are at the scene between junctions 15 and 16, with motorists reporting numerous fire engines and other emergency vehicles heading towards the incident.
Traffic has come to a complete standstill as crews deal with the blaze – thought to have started at around 11am. The eastbound carriageway is open, but slow.
Wiltshire Police said: “Please be aware that the M4 westbound between junctions 15 and 16 is closed due to a significant lorry fire.
“Please find alternate routes.”
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident involves a trailer carrying hay.
The fire service said: “The #M4 is currently closed westbound between J15 and J16 while we deal with a fire involving a trailer of hay.”
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes while the emergency response continues.
A National Highways spokesperson added: “The M4 has closed westbound between J15 Badbury and J16 Swindon due to a HGV fire.
“[DWFRS] are leading the response at scene.
“Delays of 60 minutes and approx. 4 miles of congestion on approach. Please allow extra time if you’re travelling in the area.”
The westbound carriageway is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.
