Food supply ‘critically low’ as charity rescues another suffering cat

Food supply ‘critically low’ as charity rescues another suffering cat

A Wiltshire charity have rescued another suffering cat – but their food supply is ‘critically low’ and donations have started to slow down.

Volunteers from the independent RSPCA Wiltshire Mid Branch attended reports of a severely neglected cat in the Devizes area earlier this month.

But on arrival, a simple microchip check turned into an urgent rescue. The cat, now named Edith, appeared to be in discomfort and was struggling to walk.

Her body was covered in thick, solid mats of fur that pulled painfully at her skin. Volunteers rushed her to Macqueen Vets, where she had to be sedated for treatment.

On examination, fly eggs were discovered, and her skin was damaged from constant pulling. One claw had also grown so long it had curled back into her paw, piecing it.

A spokesperson said: “No animal should have to live like that.

“Even harder to accept… Edith is a victim of a common problem where people move away and leave pets behind thinking they’ll be ok but they’re not.

“We’ve since seen photos from three years ago showing Edith in a similar condition. This wasn’t days or weeks of neglect, this was years.

“We are so grateful to the members of the public who spoke up and asked for help. Because of them, Edith is no longer suffering. Without that call, her story could have ended very differently.”

The branch said that Edith, who is elderly, is now comfortable – resting somewhere safe and warm while healing from her ordeal.

The RSPCA Wiltshire Mid Branch is not funded by the RSPCA, it operates independently. This means local donations fund local operations to protect animals.

The charity is calling out for donations due to “incredibly low” food stocks. They rely entirely on public support to continue rescuing and treating vulnerable animals.
