A children’s ‘Worm World’ kit sold in the UK has been recalled after a major health risk was unearthed, with fears it may contain asbestos.
Wiltshire Trading Standards has highlighted the recall of the My Living World Worm World Kit, which was on sale between November 2022 and February 2026.
The educational kit, designed to allow children to observe live earthworms through layered sand and soil, was manufactured in China.
Authorities say the vials of sand included in the set, product number LW102C, may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos.
Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.
The product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
The recall has been launched by Playmonster, the manufacturer, along with distributors TJ Jones and Hobbycraft. Additional distributors may be added as the recall progresses.
Owners are being urged to stop using the product immediately and keep it out of the reach of children.
If the sand remains unopened, it should be placed in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double taped securely, clearly labelled and stored safely away from children.
If the sand has already been used, affected areas should be cleaned using wet cloths to avoid creating dust. Gloves and a mask should be worn. The sand, gloves, mask and cloths should all be double bagged before disposal.
Children and others should be kept away from any area where the sand has been used until it has been thoroughly cleaned.
Consumers can dispose of the product in general household waste or return it to the relevant store for a full refund, depending on the distributor.
Customers who purchased the kit from Hobbycraft are advised to return the sand vials to their nearest store for a full refund. Those unable to visit a store should follow the disposal guidance and contact Hobbycraft to arrange a refund.
