The Met Office has issued a weather warning for Wiltshire ahead of heavy rain.
The yellow warning is in force between 9am and 11.59pm on Thursday (15 January).
Forecasters say heavy rain falling onto already saturated ground could lead to surface water flooding in some areas.
There is a possibility that a small number of homes and businesses could be affected, particularly in locations prone to flooding.
Transport disruption is also likely, with bus and train services expected to be impacted and journey times taking longer than usual.
Road users are being warned that spray and flooding could make driving conditions difficult throughout the day.
The Met Office said a deepening area of low pressure is expected to move northeast across England and Wales on Thursday.
Rain is forecast to become persistent and heavy through the day before clearing northwards during the evening and night.
Rainfall totals of twenty to forty millimetres are expected quite widely, with some areas seeing this amount fall in just a few hours.
In isolated parts of the South West, including Wiltshire, totals of forty to seventy millimetres are possible.
Given the current ground conditions, the Met Office said this could increase the risk of surface water flooding.
Residents are advised to check whether their property is at risk and consider preparing a flood plan and emergency kit if necessary.
Drivers and public transport users are being urged to check travel conditions and timetables before setting off.
The Met Office has also advised people to be prepared for possible power cuts and to keep torches, batteries and mobile phone power packs to hand.
