A Wiltshire Police staff member has been recognised nationally after finishing as runner-up for a major inspirational employment award.

Luke Newton, who joined the force 10 years ago through the Down’s Syndrome Association’s WorkFit programme, was awarded second place for the David Grainger Award at the British Association for Supported Employment ceremony at Wembley Stadium.

He works as an administrator in the Crime and Communications Centre, providing essential support to colleagues in the Operations Control Room. Wiltshire Police said his dedication and long-term commitment have made him a valued part of the team.

The BASE Awards were held on Monday, 17 November, and celebrate people with disabilities who inspire others through their work. Luke’s recognition highlights the importance of inclusive employment and the impact meaningful opportunities can have within policing.

Luke registered with WorkFit before joining Wiltshire Police as a volunteer. He hoped to secure paid employment and later achieved that goal, now working two shifts each week.

He is known for encouraging others to pursue similar opportunities, and his message is: “It can be hard at first, but it’s a great opportunity and good fun – just be yourself.”

Luke has played a key role in raising awareness around disability employment. He has spoken at police team meetings, to recruits and to other forces.

He has also addressed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion conferences, including the Black Police Officers Association National Conference, and taken part in employability events, Rotary Club talks and interviews.

Luke’s supervisor, Amy Outlaw, said: “I’ve had the privilege of working with Luke throughout his career at Wiltshire Police, and he truly is an inspirational figure. His enthusiasm for his role is contagious, and his pride in being part of the Force shines through. I couldn’t be prouder of all that Luke has accomplished.”

This was echoed by Alison Thwaite, Head of Employment Services at the Down’s Syndrome Association, who said it has been uplifting to see Luke thrive and grow as a result of his police work.

“Luke is a dedicated and knowledgeable member of the team who is proud to work in public service and always gives his best.

“As one of the many public sector employers that WorkFit partners with, Wiltshire Police is showing its commitment to building an inclusive workplace and reflecting their local community in their workforce,” she said.

And Roy Perrett, from Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group, felt that Luke is an inspiration to others.

“His desire to be professional, to work hard and inspire others is infectious, and he is such a positive example of what can be achieved in the workplace,” he said.

“Over many years, Luke has raised awareness about the benefits of employing people with disabilities in the police force and beyond.

“He has also inspired people like himself to consider working. Luke is a great credit to himself, his family and Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group, and we are so proud of him for this massive achievement.”
