A homeless woman has been raped in Swindon town centre on Sunday night.

Police officers responded to reports of a ‘serious’ sexual assault having taken place on wasteland near to the bus station at around 8.30pm on 20 May.

Following the attack, a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. He’s since been released under investigation while police enquiries continue.

Wiltshire Police believe the alleged attacker was known to the victim.

A police spokesperson said: “We would always urge anyone who is a victim of sexual assault to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“Victims can also seek support and counselling from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) based in Swindon. They can be contacted on the 24-hour helpline 0808 1680024.”
