Royal wedding policing cost £30 million after more than 3000 cops take to streets

More than 3000 police officers were involved in policing the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle yesterday – the largest operation managed by Thames Valley Police to date.

The operation – involving snipers posted on rooftops and undercover armed police covertly patrolling – was planned months before the big day, and was executed successfully.

Barriers were installed to halt car or lorry terror attacks and helicopters were seen overhead during the wedding, while marine police patrolled the River Thames.

According to BBC News: “The cost of security for the wedding will be met by the taxpayer. Initially, Thames Valley Police will have to absorb the cost itself.

“But the force will be eligible to apply for special grant funding from the Home Office after the event in order to claim back some of the costs.”
