Wiltshire Police say no crime is believed to have been committed in adding a St George’s Flag to Westbury White Horse.

A red ribbon was installed on the popular hillside landmark, which is owned by English Heritage, at some point this morning (Tuesday).

The force has confirmed that it has not launched an investigation into the incident.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of red material being pinned across the Westbury White Horse to form the St George’s Cross.

“No criminal offences are thought to have been committed and we are not investigating it.”

It’s suggested that the ribbon was pinned in the grass either side of the chalk horse, meaning there was no damage to the rock.

Westbury Town Council confirmed that work is ongoing to remove the ribbon and restore the chalk horse to its pure white form.

A spokesperson said: “We’re aware that a cross has recently been placed on the White Horse.

“The landowners, English Heritage, have been informed, and are arranging for a roped access team to attend the site as soon as possible to remove and assess any damage.”

English Heritage said that staff will be “removing it as soon as we can”, and inspecting whether the pegs used have caused damage.”
