An 18-year-old man has died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash near Swindon this morning.
Emergency services were initally called to the scene on the M4 at around 1.30am, closing the motorway in both directions between Junctions 15 (Swindon) and 14 (Hungerford).
Just one car – a black BMW with two occupants – was involved in the serious collision.
A woman passenger, 19, was taken to Great Western Hospital with minor injuries.
Baydon Road, a country lane running parallel with the motorway, was also closed by police for a number of hours due damage to fencing alongside the M4, and debris strewn across the road as a result.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “The BMW was travelling westbound when it collided with a crash barrier on the central reservation between Membury Services and Junction 15.
“Both west and eastbound carriageways were closed while officers carried out their investigations – however eastbound has just been reopened and westbound is expected to be open very soon.”
A police drone was seen hovering over the incident to capture photographs of the scene.
