An elderly dog is presumed to have died after falling into the River Avon in Salisbury.

Emergency services responded to reports a Jack Russell had fallen into the river before being swept under a bridge at around midday today (30 January).

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service had a number of appliances in attendance on Fisherton Street.

Specially trained water rescue firefighters were seen searching the River Avon as police officers cordoned off and guarded part of The Maltings.

Despite rescue efforts, the 16-year-old pet is believed to have died in the incident. The dog’s owner was said to be upset and distressed at the scene.

Wiltshire Police said they were called to the location after reports people were attempting to enter the water in order to rescue the dog.
