The race is on to save 147 hens from slaughter – with just days left to find them retirement homes near Swindon.
The ex-commercial free-range hens are destined to be killed if they are not rehomed at a British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) event in South Marston on Saturday 19 September.
Animal lovers across Swindon and Wiltshire are being urged to act quickly, with adoption bookings closing at 3pm on Friday 18 September.
The hens are reaching the end of their commercial laying lives at around 18 months old, but could have plenty of life ahead of them as pets.
Andy Hill, from the British Hen Welfare Trust, said: “People are often surprised by how much joy hens bring.
“They’re funny, curious little characters, they love routine, and they’re genuinely a delight to care for.
“Hens make great pets, with so much personality, and many will still lay the occasional egg.
“We’ve still got 147 girls waiting for homes in South Marston on 19 September, so we’re really hoping people around South Marston, Swindon and across Wiltshire can help.
“These hardworking ladies have spent their commercial lives laying for us. Now they deserve a second chance and the chance to enjoy a happy retirement.”
Anyone considering adopting the birds will need a secure hen house and outdoor area, suitable food, fresh water and appropriate care.
Hens are sociable animals, so BHWT rehomes them in groups rather than individually.
Those given homes can spend their retirement scratching, dust-bathing and exploring their surroundings, while some may continue to lay occasional eggs.
Anyone wanting to save hens from the South Marston event must register before the deadline at www.bhwt.org.uk/adopt-hens/rehoming-locations and select ‘adopt’ next to South Marston.
