Smoke from a fire on Salisbury Plain is causing ‘extreme visibility loss’.
People living in the Tilshead area have been forced to close their windows and doors due to the plume this morning (Thursday).
One local resident said that they “you can’t see a thing”, adding that they had to stop driving and turn back due it being “unsafe”.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) issued a warning about the smoke plume – which is from a contained fire in the training area’s impact zone – in the early hours.
A spokesperson said: “Please be advised the visibility in the Tilshead, Wiltshire area is extremely low due to an ongoing contained fire within the Salisbury Plain Training Area.
“Please drive with caution.”
The smoke was at is most dense at around 5am – with people only about to see clearly for a few metres, but it has cleared slightly since.
UPDATE 8.15AM: DWFRS has issued an updated statement, warning: “If you are using the A360 between Devizes and Tilshead today, please drive with caution.
“Visibility is restricted due to smoke from an ongoing fire in the Ball Down area of Wiltshire.”
