Police urge people ‘think carefully’ as Black Lives Matter protests organised

More Black Lives Matter protests have been arranged for Wiltshire as the county prepares to stand in solidarity with America following the death of George Floyd.

In London, protesters have clashed with police – some causing officers serious injuries – but the same level of violence is very unlikely to break out at local protests.

Here are some of the local protests organised for across, and near, Wiltshire:

• Town Park, Trowbridge – Thursday 4 June at 7pm

• Regent Circus, Swindon – Saturday 6 June at 1pm

• Green Park, Bath – 6 June at 2pm

• Market Place, Melksham – Sunday 7 June at 2pm

The National Police Chiefs’ Council said people should take personal responsibility when deciding whether they attend the protests, and to remember that we, as a nation, are fighting a pandemic.

Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington, lead for Public Order and Public Safety, commented: “Where there are plans for mass gatherings across the UK, forces will ensure proportionate and consistent policing plans are put in place, where required.

“The rights to protest are well established in this country; however personal responsibility is now key.

“For those who are able to leave their homes as a result of the changes, think carefully about where you are going and how you will be able to keep your distance from others.

“Keep in mind the purpose of the [coronavirus] regulations and the national effort to protect the NHS and save lives.”
