Wiltshire Police is urging the public to report incidents of suspected fox hunting.

People who witness a hunt in progress are being told to record evidence – as long as it’s safe to do so – and call 999 immediately.

The force said it does not routinely monitor trail hunts because they are a lawful activity, but they will take action when it crosses the line and foxes become involved.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: “If you see a fox hunt in progress, please call 999 and if possible provide the location using What3Words, and details of the numbers of people and dogs involved as well as the direction they are heading.

“Photo or video evidence can help us but please do so from a distance and do not put yourself at risk.

“We do not routinely monitor hunts as they are a lawful activity, if there is a suggestion of criminal offences, be they wildlife crime or other public order, assault offences or intelligence led us to believe there was a likelihood of it happening officers would attend.

“If offences under the Hunting act are witnessed, by the police or observers, they would be investigated as would any criminal offence.

“Hunt protesters and monitors have a passionate concern for the welfare of wildlife and this is understood and supported by the police and where criminal offences are suspected we urge them to come forward to provide their evidence.”
