Police have discovered a body in the search for a missing man in Swindon.

Emergency services were attended the River Ray, off Purton Road, at around 8.15am today (Friday) – with the area cordoned off to motorists and pedestrians.

Wiltshire Police has confirmed that the body of a 67-year-old man was found. He had been reported missing at around 6am.

Specialist fire service resources – including a water rescue team – were sent to the incident to provide assistance in accessing the body.

Tarpaulin sheets have been draped over the bridge, as firefighters were seen climbing into the river using ladders.

This incident is unrelated to the search for missing David, who was last seen in Highworth on Thursday (20 March). Read more >

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “A body has been found during the search for a 67-year-old who went missing in Swindon shortly after 6am this morning (21/03).

“While formal identification has not yet taken place, the man’s next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

They continued: “There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

“Officers are expected to remain at Thamesdown Drive for the next few hours.”

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We were called to Purton Bridge, Purton at 8.21am this morning (21 March) to assist the police.

“A crew from Westlea and a water rescue team from Stratton attended and our stop was at 11.10am.”
