A man has been arrested following an assault in Swindon town centre.

Police raced to the incident in Sheppard Street shortly after 11.30am this morning (Saturday, 24 September), with at least six units in attendance.

They were responding to a report of an assault involving two people – understood to be a man and woman – who are thought to be known to each other.

On arrival, officers arrested a man on suspicion of affray and a public order offence.

On being searched, an armed response officer – who was assisting at the scene – uncovered a large bottle of Frosty Jack’s cider in his rucksack.

Whilst under arrest and awaiting transport back to custody, the suspect proceeded to show his middle finger to two members of the press covering the incident.

An hour after the initial response, the man was collected by a police car and taken to Gablcecross custody for questioning.

Several officers could be seen carrying out enquiries in the area, speaking to local residents and witnesses about events.

The victim of the assault, believed to be a woman, isn’t believed to have been injured. It’s understood that the ambulance service was not called to the incident.
