A man has been killed in a hit-and-run in Swindon this afternoon (Monday).

Emergency services were called to the fatal road traffic collision in Upham Road, a 20mph zone in Old Walcot, at around 5.40pm.

The incident involved a silver Volkswagen and a man aged in his 50s – who was a pedestrian – on the junction for South View Avenue.

The victim, who is believed to live locally, sustained significant injuries and despite medics’ best efforts, he was pronounced dead.

The man’s next of kin has been informed and his family are being supported by specially-trained officers, roads policing sergeant Will Ayres confirmed.

The driver of the car drove away from the scene, failing to stop and an urgent manhunt got underway in the area.

A short time later, officers arrested a local man, aged in his 30s, in connection with the crash. He has been taken to Gablecross custody for questioning.

The Volkswagen involved has been secured and will be seized for forensic examination.

The road has been closed between Woodside Avenue, Brixham Avenue and Campden Road.

A full-scale collision investigation got underway at around 7.30pm – and is likely to take approximately 12 hours to complete. It is unlikely to reopen until morning tomorrow (Tuesday, 18 June).

Witnesses, or anyone with information or CCTV footage relating to the incident, should contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Wiltshire Police by calling 01225 694597 quoting log number 268 of today (17 June). Alternatively, contact the team directly by emailing [email protected].
